Ok, I'm back. I'm totally pooped. I've been working on a book project that's totally kicking my butt and I'm still not done yet. It's such a great project though...I can wait to share it everyone once I'm allowed to. Sorry I haven't gotten around to addressing any of the comments either, I'll work on that shortly. Enough about me, let's talk about this image above.
So designer Michelle Soleau of Spaltana (she does those gorgeous antler lamps), turned me onto Aboriginal art on ebay. So my head was spinning for a couple days because I found this painting that I totally loved by Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi. The colors, the dot-technique, the coral-like forms--it's amazing! The bidding started in the low hundreds, so I thought, "maybe I can afford this". Then of course, the bidding started spiraling out of control by the end...and I think it sold for something like $2000--which I still think is a great price for the painting and it's size, too. I think it was like 4' x 7'. Here are some close-ups of the painting plus an image of the artist holding the canvas...
Here were some other pieces (by another artist) that caught my eye and sort of reminded me of Scandivanian forms.
Anyway, I think it's great that ebay has provided these indigenous people with a way to sell their art and connect them with a global audience. I'd really like to learn more about Aboriginal art now.
There is a great exhibit right now at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in D.C. on Aboriginal art.
